ANACONDA BEND: THE LONGEST SNAKE is a printable jungle escape room party game for kids of 7 to 11

At a bend of a rainforest river, the longest anaconda anyone has seen is fast asleep in front of your canoes. The rule of the bend is: give the snake room. Nobody wakes her, nobody touches her. So the only way home is through the old gate of the Sun Marker pyramid, and its lock is opened by measuring. The children build a paper anaconda 4 metres (13 feet) long, measure with her, open the Bend Gate and read the river keeper's last note.

THIS IS AN ESCAPE ROOM PARTY GAME, played with printed puzzle pages, envelopes and a giant paper snake on the floor. It is not a book and not a worksheet pack.

Every solved puzzle wins a piece of the snake. Collect all 12 to finish her, then she becomes the ruler that opens the final lock.

Needs only paper, scissors and tape. No special paper or pens. Printed in full colour (an ink-saver edition is in the bonus folder).

14 puzzles of 14 different kinds, 5 of them kinds of math pyramid puzzle (8 kinds with the free bonus).

How It Plays

  • The players are river guides in three crews: the Bank Crew, the River Crew and the Canopy Crew. All three play side by side, so nobody waits
  • Each crew solves four puzzles, easy to harder. Every puzzle is a different kind and ends in a code
  • The crew finds its code on the Bend Board. Same picture sign as on the puzzle page? The code is right, and the crew opens the envelope with that sign. No grown-up has to check answers
  • Inside is one piece of the paper anaconda: 25 cm of snake with a centimetre scale on her belly, a numbered sun spot and a gold letter. The crew tapes it in where its centimetres fit
  • The head and the tail lie on the floor from the start. The children watch the gap close until the snake is 16 pieces and 4 metres long: as long as a big wild one
  • Measuring Day: everybody measures six real animal lengths against the snake, from a newborn anaconda (60 cm) to a big arapaima fish (2 m 60 cm). The six sun spots they land on fill the Bend Gate pyramid, and its top brick is the gate code
  • Inside the gate waits the Keeper's Note, written in sun-spot numbers. The snake's gold letters decode it
  • A full host guide is included, with a script, a version for 2 to 4 players and a 45-minute version

14 Puzzles, Easy To Harder

  • Bank Crew: Sand Stack (an adding pyramid), Tail Tips (match the pattern under a snake's tail), Tracks in the Sand (measured with the paper snake's own belly scale), Sunning Stones (a pyramid with gaps)
  • River Crew: Mooring Posts (a number pattern), Eyes on the Water (a counting picture), Lily Pad Bricks (a picture pyramid), Post to Post (measuring swimming snakes by the posts of a jetty)
  • Canopy Crew: Fact or Fib? (true facts about anacondas), Dawdle's Tree (logic clues), Layer Chart (a picture chart of the rainforest layers), The Slow Way Down (a path through a pyramid)
  • Everybody: The Bend Gate (a pyramid fed by measuring) and The Keeper's Note (a number code)
  • 5 kinds of math pyramid puzzle: an adding pyramid, a pyramid with gaps, a picture pyramid, a pyramid path and a measured pyramid. In all of them a brick is the two bricks under it, added together
  • The maths is for ages 7 to 11: adding and taking away within 100, counting on in 50s, centimetres and metres, a picture chart with a key. No multiplying in the main game

The Paper Snake

  • 16 pieces on 8 sheets, cut out with straight cuts. Taped together she is 4 metres (13 feet) long and 8 cm wide
  • Her yellow belly is a ruler in centimetres from 0 at the nose to 400 at the tail tip
  • Head to tail, her gold letters spell the rule of the bend
  • She is life-size in length (4 metres is a big female green anaconda). A real one is much thicker

Nobody Gets Stuck

  • Every code is checked on the Bend Board: a likely mistake shows a different sign, or is not there at all
  • A hint card with three steps for every puzzle: a nudge, the method, the answer
  • An answer card, every solution explained, and every puzzle shown solved
  • If the 60 minutes run out, nobody loses: the rain starts, the canoes wait a little longer, and the game goes on

Good To Know

  • Digital download only: nothing is shipped.
  • Ages 7 to 11. 2 to 12 players in three crews. Sevens and eights play best with an older child in the crew or a grown-up nearby.
  • About 60 minutes of play with three crews. One small crew that plays everything needs about two hours; the host guide has a one-hour version.
  • You need a printer (colour looks best), 13 envelopes, scissors, pencils, sticky tape and 4 metres of floor. The snake may bend round a corner. About 30 minutes to print, cut and fill the envelopes.
  • Print at 100% (actual size), on one side of the paper: the snake is a ruler.
  • Play times are plans, not promises: the puzzles are checked by computer, but no real party has timed this game for us. Hints keep every crew moving.
  • Give the snake room: no animal is chased, caught, touched or harmed in this game. The snake sleeps, the children go round her, and she swims away by herself. The anaconda facts are true. No holiday theme, so it suits any time of year.
  • Not suitable for children under 3 (small paper parts).
  • Love math pyramids? Creouts Publishing also publishes math pyramid puzzle books in paperback: see creouts.com/pyramid-puzzle-books/.
