THE BOOKBINDER'S RIDDLE: a printable escape room game for family game night, ages 10 to adult

On the island of Marblewick every book is bound by one pair of hands: those of Maren Larkspur, the Bookbinder. Tonight is Story Night, when the whole island sits down in the square to hear the first page of the new Island Book. But Maren's ferry is late, and the Island Book is shut inside the Riddle Press. The press opens only for somebody who can answer the Bookbinder's Riddle, and Maren has cut her riddle into twelve leaves and hidden them all over the Bindery. You are her apprentices. Find the leaves, put the riddle together and open the press. Deckle, the Bindery gecko, shows the way.

THIS IS AN ESCAPE ROOM GAME, played round a table with printed puzzle pages, envelopes, cards and papers. It is not a book to read from page to page, and not a worksheet pack.

Every solved puzzle wins a card. Collect all 12 to open the final lock.

You get an evidence file: an order book, a shelf card, a book number card and four collection tickets. Read it like a detective.

Needs only paper, scissors and tape. No special paper or pens.

How It Plays

  • The Bindery has three benches: Folding, Sewing and Finishing. Each bench has four puzzles, called leaves, from easy to harder
  • Every leaf is a different kind of puzzle and gives a code
  • The players find the code on the Spine Shelf, a bookcase of 96 spines. Same gold mark on the spine as on the puzzle page? The code is right, and the next envelope may be opened
  • Inside waits a leaf card: one line of the riddle
  • With all twelve leaf cards, everybody works together: put the leaves in order by their catchwords (the way old printers did), read the riddle aloud, answer its three verses, and read three rows of letters along the edges of the cards. Three numbers open the Riddle Press
  • No host is needed to check answers. A full host guide is included, and it says how a host can play along
  • One team can take the benches in any order, or work on all three at once, so nobody waits

13 Puzzles, Easy To Harder

  • 12 leaves of 12 different kinds: Book Stack, Fold and Count, The Loose Sheets, The Book Code, Thread Maze, Stitch Patterns, Half-Way Stack, The Bookworm, Cloth Stack, Gold Letters, The Smudged Numbers, Whose Book?
  • Then the last lock: The Bookbinder's Riddle
  • 5 kinds of math pyramid puzzle: adding (Book Stack), a Pyramid Maze where the thread follows shared digits (Thread Maze), averages (Half-Way Stack), a pattern rule with three cloths (Cloth Stack) and letters that count as numbers and hide a word (Gold Letters)
  • 8 more kinds: an order book to read, the page numbers of a folded booklet, a book cipher (page, line, word), stitch patterns sewn with one thread, a famous bookworm riddle, book numbers that check themselves (the way a real ISBN does), a deduction from four tickets, and the riddle itself
  • The maths is for ages 10 and up: adding and taking away, a little multiplying, halves, and a lot of careful thinking. Nothing needs a calculator. Teens and grown-ups will not be bored: the last leaf of every bench makes people think

The Evidence File And The Paper Prop

  • 4 papers, typed in plain 14-point letters: no handwriting to puzzle out, and nothing printed over a number
  • The Binder's Pocket Guide: one printed sheet that the players fold, with one cut, into a real little book of eight pages. Then they look up clues in it by page, line and word
  • 12 leaf cards to win, one for every leaf, each with a line of the riddle, a catchword and six letters on its edge

Nobody Gets Stuck

  • Every code is checked on the Spine Shelf: a likely mistake shows another mark, or is not there at all
  • Three hints for every puzzle: a nudge, the method, the answer. A hint costs a ribbon token, and to fetch it every player names a book they love
  • An answer card, every solution explained, and every puzzle shown solved
  • If the time runs out, nobody loses: everybody has to whisper until the press is open
