FOSSIL CAMP: THE CRACKING DINO EGG, a printable dinosaur escape room game for ages 6 to 9
A storm has washed something out of Dig Pit 1: a big speckled egg. It is warm, and it goes tap, tap, CRACK. A baby dinosaur is about to hatch! It must hatch in its own nest, next to its mother, in Fern Valley behind Pyramid Rock. The only way in is the Bone Gate, and the gate opens with a code hidden in nine bone cards. Scuff, the camp armadillo, shows the way. Find the nest before the egg hatches.
THIS IS AN ESCAPE ROOM PARTY GAME, played with printed puzzle pages, envelopes, cards and a cut-out paper ruler at a table or around the house. It is not a book and not a worksheet pack.
Every solved puzzle wins a bone card. Collect all 9 to build the skeleton and open the final lock.
Many clues are in the pictures, so younger players can join in.
Needs only paper, scissors and tape. No special paper or pens.
How It Plays
- The players make three teams. Each team solves three puzzles at three sites of the camp, side by side, so nobody waits
- Every site is a different kind of puzzle and gives a code
- The team finds its code on the Camp Board. Same little picture as on the puzzle page? The code is right, and the next envelope may be opened
- Inside waits a bone card. With all 9 cards the teams meet at the Bone Gate
- Together they lay the cards in a row, skull to tail tip, to build one long skeleton. The half shapes on the edges of the cards show the order
- The big numbers on the cards go into the gate, a pyramid made of pyramids. Its top brick opens the last envelope: the nest
- No host is needed to check answers. A full host guide is included
10 Puzzles, Easy To Harder
- 9 sites of 9 different kinds: Rock Stack, Tangled Trails, Stepping Stones, Track Stack, Bone Ruler, Crate Stack, Count the Dig, Whose Egg?, Dig Down. Then the Bone Gate finale
- 6 kinds of math pyramid puzzle: adding (Rock Stack), counting footprints and adding (Track Stack), a Pyramid Maze of odd numbers (Stepping Stones), adding and taking away (Crate Stack), an upside-down take-away pyramid (Dig Down) and a pyramid of pyramids built from the bone cards (the Bone Gate)
- 4 more kinds: trails to follow with a finger, fossil bones to measure with a paper ruler, a dig pit to count, and eight dinosaurs with four picture clues
- The maths is for ages 6 to 9: counting, adding and taking away within 20 at the first sites, within 50 at the last ones, odd and even numbers, measuring in whole steps. No multiplying. Each puzzle sits a step below the top of the age band, so a team can finish it together
- A grown-up reads the story aloud. Six-year-olds will want a reader on their team
Paper Props To Cut Out
- 9 bone cards to win, one for every site: one skeleton drawn across nine cards
- A paper ruler that measures fossil bones in steps
Nobody Gets Stuck
- The Camp Board checks every code: a wrong code shows the wrong picture, or is not there at all
- Three hints for every puzzle: a nudge, the method, the answer. A hint costs a brush token, and the whole team must stomp to the host like dinosaurs to fetch it
- An answer card, every solution explained, and every puzzle shown solved
- If the Egg Timer runs out, nobody loses: everybody has to walk like a baby dinosaur until the gate is open

Good To Know
- Digital download only: nothing is shipped.
- Ages 6 to 9. 2 to 12 players: three teams of 1 to 4, or one small team. For 13 or more, print the kit twice and run two tables.
- About 45 minutes of play with three teams. One small team that plays everything needs about 75 minutes, or about 50 with the shorter game in the host guide.
- You need a printer (colour looks best), 16 envelopes, scissors, pencils and tape. About an hour to print, cut and fill the envelopes.
- Print at 100% (actual size), on one side of the paper.
- Play times are plans, not promises: no child has timed this game for us. Hints keep every team moving.
- The dinosaurs are gentle plant-eaters. Nothing is chased or harmed, the egg goes home to its nest, and there is no holiday in the story. Good for birthdays, playdates, family afternoons, clubs and classrooms all year round. The five dino facts are true; the hatching egg is make-believe.
- Not suitable for children under 3 (small paper parts).
- Love math pyramids? Creouts Publishing also publishes math pyramid puzzle books in paperback: see creouts.com/pyramid-puzzle-books/.
