THE LEMONADE LOCKOUT: a math escape room game for Grades 4 and 5
It is the hottest day of the Puckerdune Summer Fair, beside the golden pyramid, and at noon the whole fair will come for lemonade. But last night Rindle the tortoise locked the stand's shutter, and now Rindle cannot remember the code! Six places around the stand are six stations. Each station gives a crew ONE number: how many cups one of the first six customers will order. Serve the noon rush with the right change, and the way through gives the four-digit shutter code.
THIS IS A PRINTABLE ESCAPE ROOM GAME for a classroom (4 to 6 teams) or for 1 to 6 students at home. It is not a book and not a worksheet pack: crews move around six stations, write their numbers on an Order Slip, and crack one last lock together. Everything is paper: no padlocks or boxes needed.
HOW IT PLAYS (60 to 75 minutes, or two shorter lessons)
- Story and warm-up: a money pyramid that teaches the rule of the day (every brick is the two bricks under it added together)
- Six stations, about 7 to 9 minutes each; every crew starts at a different one
- The Noon Rush: a pyramid maze. Each station number is a customer's order: work out the price and the change, then step onto the brick that shows the next customer's change. One way reaches the shutter, and the four gold lemons on it give the code
- With a likely slip in a station number there is no way through, so crews know to recheck
- Open for business! Certificates for everyone
Two Levels, One Answer Key
- Small Cup cards, Grade 4: coins and dollar bills, adding and taking away money, making change from $10, cups, pints, quarts and gallons in whole units, fourths, a fraction times a whole number
- Large Cup cards, Grade 5: two clues in every coin riddle, four-row pyramids, fractions of a quart or a gallon, unit prices, multiplying money by a whole number, change from $20, gallons to cups and dividing by a unit fraction
- Both levels of a station give the SAME number, so mixed classes and split grades play side by side and you check everyone with one key
Seven Kinds Of Puzzle
- 3 kinds of math pyramid puzzle: Coin Stack (the bottom bricks are pictures of bills and coins to count, then every brick is the two under it added), Pour Stack (pitchers labeled in cups, pints, quarts and gallons, poured together) and the Noon Rush (a pyramid maze of change)
- 4 hands-on puzzles: Coin Riddles ("I am 7 coins and I make 40 cents..."), Market Run (buy everything on the list for the least money: the biggest pack is not always the best buy), Splashed Receipts (pink lemonade hid two digits on every receipt: work column by column to find them) and Big Batch (scale up a recipe to fill the cooler, then count the lemons to squeeze)
- 1 more kind of math pyramid, the Change Stack (every brick is a difference), is in the free bonus folder with three bigger puzzles: 4 kinds of math pyramid puzzle in all, plus a warm-up money pyramid
- Stations are numbered from the easiest to the hardest, as two AI test solves ranked them
- Every card sits one step below the top of its grade, so a crew can finish it together
Skills Practiced
Counting coins and bills, adding and subtracting money, making change, comparing ways to buy, multiplying money by a whole number, place value and regrouping, missing digits, customary units of capacity (cups, pints, quarts, gallons), adding fractions, multiplying a fraction by a whole number, dividing by a unit fraction. A skills page lists the US Common Core codes for Grade 4 and Grade 5 (a planning guide; not endorsed by the standards' authors). All money is US dollars and cents.

Good To Know
- Digital download only: nothing is shipped.
- Print at 100% (actual size), single-sided.
- Play times are plans, not promises: classes differ. Hints keep every crew moving.
- Not tested with a class: it was solved and set up from the printed pages alone by separate AI sessions, and their notes were acted on.
- No holiday theme: it suits a money unit, test-prep review, end of year, back to school, summer school, a math club or a party.
- Not suitable for children under 3 (small cut-out parts).
- Love math pyramids? Creouts Publishing also publishes math pyramid puzzle books in paperback: see creouts.com/pyramid-puzzle-books/.
