THE AQUEDUCT LEAK: a Roman numerals math escape room game for Grades 3 to 5
In the oasis town of Archwater, beside the golden pyramid, an old stone aqueduct carries water from a spring on the green hill to the town fountain and the gardens. This morning the fountain only drips: the aqueduct has sprung a leak! Nummo the otter, the town's young water engineer, needs a crew. The old builders marked everything in Roman numerals. Six places along the aqueduct are six stations, and each gives ONE number. In the finale your six numbers open the Water Gates, and the water spells the password that starts the fountain again.
THIS IS A PRINTABLE ESCAPE ROOM GAME for a classroom (4 to 6 teams) or for 1 to 6 children at home. It is not a book and not a worksheet pack: crews move around six stations, write each number in digits AND in Roman numerals on a Water Log, and crack one last lock together. Everything is paper: no padlocks or boxes needed.
HOW IT PLAYS (60 to 75 minutes, or two shorter lessons)
- Story and Arch Check warm-up: read three Roman milestones, add them, write the total in Roman numerals
- Six stations, about 7 to 9 minutes each; every crew starts at a different one
- The Water Gates: a gate carved with one of your six numbers is open. Follow the water from the spring to the fountain and read the letters it passes. Beside every open gate stand its look-alikes (LIX and LXI ...), so a slip sends the water the wrong way: it gets stuck or spells another word, and the crew knows to check its numbers
- The password starts the fountain again: certificates for everyone
Two Levels, One Answer Key
- Lower Arch cards, Grades 3-4: numerals to LXX on most cards (with IV, IX, XL), time to the minute on a Roman dial, two balance scales, rod sums to XXXIX, a four-row add-up arch
- High Arch cards, Grades 4-5: numerals to CLXX and a stray stone, two time spans across noon, three scales with three unknowns, the L rod, a downhill rule with a limit, a five-row arch to CCC
- Both levels of a station give the SAME number, so mixed classes play side by side and you check everyone with one key
- The Roman key (I, V, X, L, C and IV, IX, XL, XC) is printed on every card
SIX STATIONS ALONG THE AQUEDUCT (numbered from the easiest to the hardest, as our AI test solves ranked them)
- I The Spring House, The Jug Scales: balanced scales with Roman weights; find what the water jar weighs
- II The Milestone Road, Milestone Mix-Up: a sandstorm knocked the milestones over; read, order, find the step and the missing stone
- III The Valley Arch, The Leaking Arch: every stone is the two under it added, but one was carved wrong; find the leak
- IV The Garden Steps, The Cascade: a pyramid maze where the water only runs downhill to the garden; add the lily basins on its route
- V The Clock Courtyard, The Water Clock: read Roman-numeral dials to the minute; how long was the gate shut?
- VI The Reed Bench, The Reed Rods: Roman sums built from reed rods; move ONE rod to make each sum true
3 Kinds Of Math Pyramid Puzzle
- In the kit: the Leaking Arch (an add-up pyramid with one wrong stone to find) and the Cascade (a pyramid maze)
- In the free bonus folder: the Reed Pyramid, a math pyramid built from rods: move one rod to fix it
WHAT YOU GET (instant download, 4 PDF files)
- Full kit, US Letter (39 pages)
- Full kit, A4 (39 pages)
- Projector slides, 16:9 (12 slides: story, mission, the Roman key, move signal, countdown, the Water Gates, the fountain runs!, answers)
- Tablet edition with tap-to-jump hint and answer buttons (classroom play needs the printed cards)
- Free bonus folder (QR code inside): Fountain Night (4 fast-finisher cards with answers and hints: The Reed Pyramid, The Pipe Patch, The Year Stones with D and M, The Cistern) and ink-saver editions of every page
Inside The Kit
- For the teacher: what to print and how many (with sheet counts), a room plan, a 75-minute and a 60-minute plan by the clock, a step-by-step script that also works without a projector, skills with Common Core codes, an answer key with solved pictures, 3-step hint cards for every puzzle (where to start, the method, the worked answer)
- For every crew: mission page, Water Log with the warm-up and three water tokens (hints), crew badges and job cards (Reader, Recorder, Checker, Runner)
- For the room: six full-color station signs
- The puzzles: 12 station cards (six stations, two levels) and two Water Gates cards
- Two-up certificates with type-in names
You Will Need
Printer (color looks best; ink-saver pages are in the bonus folder), paper, pencils, a blue pencil or crayon, scrap paper, a clock and tape for the signs. 30 to 40 minutes to print and set up the first time. Every crew writes on its own cards (or use plastic sleeves and dry-erase pens to save paper).
Good To Know
- Digital download only: nothing is shipped.
- Print at 100% (actual size), single-sided.
- Play times are plans, not promises: classes differ. Hints keep every crew moving.
- Not tested with a class: it was solved and set up from the printed pages alone by separate AI sessions, and their notes were acted on.
- Roman numerals are not a Common Core standard of their own: the kit practices Grade 3-5 standards along the way (time, place value, adding, unknowns), and fits Years 3 to 5 in England.
- Great for a Roman numerals unit, math centers, a sub day, a math club or a party at home.
- Love math pyramids? Creouts Publishing also publishes math pyramid puzzle books in paperback: see creouts.com/pyramid-puzzle-books/.
