THE TOUCAN'S LOST MAP is a printable jungle explorer escape room party game for kids of 7 to 11

Tolo the toucan is your guide through the Green Tangle, and he carries the only map in his big, bright beak. Then he opens his beak to say "Look!" and the wind takes the map. It tears into sixteen squares. Tolo saves the four corners; twelve jungle animals find one square each. The children solve the animals' puzzles, win the squares back, put the map together and use it to find the way home through the Pyramid Pass before the afternoon rain.

THIS IS AN ESCAPE ROOM PARTY GAME, played with printed puzzle pages, envelopes and a paper map that the children mend on the table. It is not a book and not a worksheet pack.

Every solved puzzle wins a piece of the map. Collect all 12 to finish it, then the map itself opens the final lock.

Needs only paper, scissors and tape. No special paper or pens. Printed in full colour (an ink-saver edition is in the bonus folder).

15 puzzles of 15 different kinds, 5 of them kinds of math pyramid puzzle.

How It Plays

  • The players are explorers in three trail teams: the Frog Trail, the Monkey Trail and the Butterfly Trail. All three play side by side, so nobody waits
  • Each team solves four puzzles, easy to harder. Every puzzle is a different kind and ends in a code
  • The team finds its code on the Trail Post. Same fruit sign as on the puzzle page? The code is right, and the team opens the envelope with that sign. No grown-up has to check answers
  • Inside is one square of the map, with a landmark, a gold trail stone and a flag. The team tapes it in where its name says: A1 to D4, like a real grid map
  • The four corners lie on the table from the start. The children watch the map grow until it is 16 squares and 36 cm (14 in) wide
  • The Way Home: each team walks its own compass route across the finished map with a paper toucan ("Go 2 squares EAST, then 1 square NORTH") and collects four trail-stone numbers. Every walk must end on the Pyramid Pass, so a team sees for itself if a step went wrong
  • The Pyramid Pass: a pyramid maze of 28 stones. The twelve numbers are twelve hops to the top stone, and the top stone is the last code
  • Tolo's Note: a message written in map squares. The flags on the map decode it
  • A full host guide is included, with a script, a version for 2 to 4 players and a 45-minute version

15 Puzzles, Easy To Harder

  • Frog Trail: Leaf Loads (an adding pyramid), Legs on the Log (count the animals, multiply the legs), Signpost Sums (distances along a trail), Round the Pool (number logic on six stepping stones)
  • Monkey Trail: The Seed Trail (follow the arrows), Pack the Backpack (make the total), Hidden Roots (a pyramid to work up and down), The Tallest Tower (which order makes the top brick biggest?)
  • Butterfly Trail: A Butterfly Grows Up (put a life in order), Map Snips (find the map square), Both Visit (counting on in 4s and 6s), Butterfly Wings (a pyramid whose two sides match)
  • Everybody: The Way Home (a compass walk), The Pyramid Pass (a pyramid maze) and Tolo's Note (a map code)
  • 5 kinds of math pyramid puzzle: add up, work back, best order, mirror wings and a pyramid maze. In all of them a brick is the two bricks under it, added together
  • The maths is for ages 7 to 11: adding and taking away within 100, the 2, 4 and 6 times tables, counting on in 4s and 6s. No fractions, no dividing
  • Real map skills: grid squares, the four compass points, following a route

The Paper Map

  • 16 squares on 4 sheets, cut out with straight cuts. Taped together the map is 36 cm (14 in) wide
  • Sixteen landmarks, from Lookout Perch to the Pyramid Pass, with a river and trails that run on from square to square
  • Three stand-up paper toucans (one for each team) and a compass card are included

Nobody Gets Stuck

  • The Trail Post checks every code: a wrong code shows a different sign, or is not there at all
  • A hint card with three steps for every puzzle: a nudge, the method, the answer
  • An answer card, every solution explained, and every puzzle shown solved
  • If the 60 minutes run out, nobody loses: the first drops fall and the teams finish under an umbrella

Good To Know

  • Digital download only: nothing is shipped.
  • Ages 7 to 11. 2 to 12 players in three teams. Sevens and eights play best with an older child in the team or a grown-up nearby.
  • About 60 minutes of play with three teams. One small team that plays everything needs about 80 minutes; the host guide has a shorter version.
  • You need a printer (colour looks best), 13 envelopes, scissors, pencils, sticky tape and a table for the map. About 30 minutes to print, cut and fill the envelopes.
  • Print at 100% (actual size), on one side of the paper.
  • Play times are plans, not promises: the puzzles are checked by computer, but no real party has timed this game for us. Hints keep every team moving.
  • Kind to every animal: no animal is chased, caught or harmed in this game. The animals find the map squares and give them back. The twelve animal facts are true. No holiday theme, so it suits any time of year.
  • Not suitable for children under 3 (small paper parts).
  • Love math pyramids? Creouts Publishing also publishes math pyramid puzzle books in paperback: see creouts.com/pyramid-puzzle-books/.
